The Microsoft Office apps are customisable. You can activate and deactivate entire ribbons as well as modify them. You can also create your own ribbons.

Ribbon

The below screenshots illustrate the process of activating the Developer tab (which is deactivated by default):

  1. Right-click on any of the menu tabs
  2. Select the Customize the Ribbon… option
  1. Select Options from the bottom of the File menu
  2. The Excel Options dialog should open on the Customize Ribbon section
  3. Activate the Developer tab as shown
  4. Left-click the OK button

Quick Access Toolbar

I also like to customize the Quick Access Toolbar; I always add the Close File command:

  1. Right-click anywhere on the Quick Access Toolbar
  2. Select the Customize Quick Access Toolbar… option

  1. The Excel Options dialog should open on the Quick Access Toolbar section
  2. Select All Commands
  3. Left click the Close File command
  4. Left click the Add » button
  5. To add the command to the selection box on the right
  6. You can reorganise the commands in the Quick Access Toolbar
  7. Left click the OK button
