PCs locked with Veyon.PCs locked with Veyon.

Veyon is a free, open-source software that allows users to monitor and control computers across multiple platforms. It can be used for classroom management, virtual training, and remote support. I refuse to teach in a computer lab without it!

Required knowledge:

Features

The following can be accomplished on individual computers or multiple computers simultaneously:

  • Using functions on individual computers
  • Monitoring mode allows observing without any activity showing on the student(s) screen
  • Demonstration mode displays your screen on the student(s) screen (this can be more effective than using a data projector)
  • Lock screens, preventing students from continuing working when you require their attention elsewhere
  • Remote access allows you to remotely operate student computers
  • Power on, restart and shutdown computers
  • Log users in, especially useful when performing admin & maintenance tasks on student computers
  • Log users off at the end of a lesson if students forget to do so
  • Send text message
  • Run program
  • Open a website in the browser of your choice
  • File transfer allows easy distribution of classroom material
  • Screenshot student screens as evidence of behavioural issues

Download, install, configure

Visit the downloads page here: https://veyon.io/en/download/

Install the client software on all computers on the network. Install Veyon Master (the monitoring software) on the teacher’s computer.

I configured my lab using computer names and MAC addresses. This is time-consuming!

Motivation

  • It is free
  • It is a mature product with a full feature set
  • It is secure
  • It allows a single teacher to monitor students in a class where this is otherwise impossible. This is essential for protecting students from the harm that can come from access to the Internet, from becoming distracted and from cyberbullying in class.
  • It allows a teacher to control the class in terms of attention
  • It allows the teacher — or a nominated student — to demonstrate from their computer by casting their screen to the class
  • It is an essential time-saver for software maintenance and for preparing and conducting practical assessments
